There's something about the hour before sunset that transforms an already beautiful setting into something unforgettable. At Born to Run Farm, we watch it happen nearly every weekend during the wedding season. The light shifts, the mountain views deepen, and couples who booked us for the scenery suddenly realize they're standing in the middle of a photographer's dream.
We're a family owned open air venue on top of Point Mountain in Glen Gardner, and we've hosted weddings here since 2016. Our location gives you those unobstructed western views that golden hour photographers search for, and the elevation means you're above the tree line where light can work without interruption. If you've been planning around sunset photos, this matters more than you might think.
Why Golden Hour Works So Well on a Mountain Top Farm
Our spot on Point Mountain creates conditions that photographers specifically look for, and couples notice the difference when they see their photos. The elevation puts you above typical obstructions, the open air layout gives your photographer room to work from multiple angles, and the western exposure means that warm, directional light hits exactly where you need it. When you combine those elements with a working farm backdrop and flexible event spaces, golden hour becomes more than just good lighting; it becomes the through line for your entire celebration.

Natural Light That Photographers Actually Want
Our spot on Point Mountain puts you high enough that the horizon stays clear. When the sun drops in the late afternoon, nothing is blocking that warm, directional light. Your photographer won't need to hunt for the one good angle or work around buildings and power lines. The whole property opens up.
We've worked with preferred photographers like Janine Collette, MZ, BTR, and Wildflower, and they tell us the same thing. The elevation and open air layout give them flexibility. Ceremony at 5:00, cocktails at 5:45, and you're hitting that 6:30 to 7:15 window when everything glows. Our Edison bulb lighting in the 40' x 100' tent picks up right when natural light fades, so the transition from golden hour into your reception feels smooth rather than abrupt.
Timing Your Ceremony Around the Light
If golden hour is a priority, you'll want to plan your ceremony for mid to late afternoon. That gives you time for family portraits in softer light before the sun drops, then positions your cocktail hour during that magic window. We set up the ceremony site with an arbor, chairs, and benches, and the backdrop is always the mountain range. You're not competing with the view, you're using it.
Our golf cart services move guests between the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception spaces without losing time. Your photographer can grab those couple portraits by the fire pit or near the vintage horse trailer bar while your guests enjoy wine barrel setups during cocktails. The layout keeps everything close, so you're not spending your golden hour in transit.
The Farm Adds Texture, Not Distraction
We're a working farm. About 30 cows, a dozen sheep, 2 donkeys, and chickens live here full time. None of them show up in your ceremony space, but they do show up in your wide shots and candid moments. If you want that authentic farm feel without staged props, this is it.
The mix of pastoral elements, mountain views, and that soft evening light gives your photos depth. The vintage horse trailer bar in The Elouise package and the outdoor lounge furniture in The Dorothy package photograph especially well during golden hour. The contrast between rustic details and refined lighting makes everything feel intentional without looking overdone.
Three Package Levels Built for Customization
We offer three packages, all designed to give you flexibility in how you set up your day.
The Daisy includes your 40' x 100' tent with electric, Edison bulb lighting, carpet flooring, chandelier, and side walls, plus a 20' x 40' tent. You'll have 20 round tables in 60" and 72" sizes, 240 white resin folding chairs, and a 28' x 18' dance floor. The ceremony site comes with an arbor, chairs, and benches. For cocktail hour, we provide a wine barrel bar, wine barrels, and a reception bar.
The Elouise adds 20 farm tables and the vintage horse trailer bar. If you're picturing a more textured, less formal dinner setup, this is the package that gives you those options.
Dorothy includes everything in The Daisy and The Elouise, plus access to the bridal suite for 5 hours before your wedding, outdoor lounge furniture, and an engagement photo session. That engagement session lets you scout the property, test the light, and figure out where you want your golden hour portraits before your actual wedding day.
Every package includes 6 banquet tables, table numbers, umbrellas, staff support, golf cart services, parking, a fire pit, and a bathroom trailer for weddings of over 75 guests.
A La Carte Additions for the Details
If you want to build beyond the package, we offer a champagne wall, additional farm tables, more outdoor lounge furniture, or the vintage horse trailer as a standalone rental. You can layer in what matches your vision without paying for a package tier you won't fully use.
Guidance, Not Gatekeeping
We've been family owned since Jay and Joan Gerish bought this land in 1978. When we opened the venue in 2016, we knew we wanted to stay involved. That means you work directly with us during planning. We'll walk the property with you, talk through timing, and help you think through how the light will move across the space on your specific date.
We provide preferred vendors in categories like catering, entertainment, florals, and rentals. These are teams we've worked with and trust. You're welcome to bring in your own vendors if you have a specific vision. Our goal is to support what you're building, not limit it.
Planning Around Weather and Season
Golden hour looks different depending on the season, and New Jersey weather doesn't always cooperate. The side walls on the 40' x 100' tent give you coverage if the wind picks up or temperatures drop in the evening. The Edison bulb lighting and chandelier inside the tent mean your reception space stays warm and lit regardless of cloud cover.
If your ceremony timing depends on clear skies and the forecast shifts, our staff will work with you on adjustments. The golf carts can move guests quickly if you need to compress timing, and the covered tent means your reception isn't dependent on perfect conditions.
Best Seasons for Consistent Golden Hour
Late spring through early fall gives you the longest and most predictable golden hour windows. Summer weddings in July and August push sunset closer to 8:00 or 8:30, which means you can schedule a later ceremony and still catch that light. Fall weddings in September and October bring earlier sunsets, around 6:30 to 7:00, but the color payoff is worth adjusting your timeline.
We host weddings, showers, birthdays, and corporate events year round, so we've seen how the light behaves in every season. If you're booking specifically for golden hour, we'll talk through what to expect based on your date.
Comfortable Spaces from Ceremony Through Reception
We include 240 white resin folding chairs, so your guests aren't standing through the ceremony. The round tables and farm tables in the tent give you options for how formal or relaxed you want dinner to feel. The outdoor lounge furniture in The Dorothy package creates gathering spots outside the main tent, which is especially nice during golden hour when people naturally want to be outside.
The bathroom trailer is required for weddings over 75 guests, and the size scales with your count. It's positioned away from the main event spaces but close enough that guests aren't hiking.
Real Feedback from Couples Who've Celebrated Here
We're rated 4.8 out of 5 stars based on 63 Google reviews, and a lot of that feedback centers on the views, the staff, and how the space photographs. Couples mention that the sunset was better than expected, the staff stayed attentive without hovering, and the family run feel made everything more personal.
One recurring theme is that the venue looks just as good in person as it does in photos, which matters if you've been planning around a visual you saw online. The mountain views and open layout are consistent no matter when you visit.
Making Golden Hour Part of Your Planning
If you're reading this because you want those glowing, warm toned photos, here's what we recommend. Schedule your ceremony for 4:00 or 5:00 depending on the season. Plan a cocktail hour for the hour leading into sunset. Give your photographer 20 to 30 minutes during cocktails for couple portraits, our staff and golf carts make it easy to step away briefly. Then move into your reception as the Edison bulbs take over.

The engagement photo session in The Dorothy package is worth considering if you're unsure about timing or locations on the property. It gives you a rehearsal run for the light and the angles, and your photographer will know exactly where to position you on the wedding day.
We're here to talk through how your specific vision fits with our space. We've been guiding couples through this since 2016, and we understand that golden hour isn't just about pretty photos; it's about creating a moment that feels as good as it looks.
